When was the last time you had a real date night with your husband? If you’re like me, you can track that back to the last time a great movie hit the theater or maybe it was all the way back to Valentine’s Day. It’s hard to remember sometimes. Your days all run together as you go through life, but I can promise you that learning how to rock that at-home date night will be a game changer. You have everything you need to make for an awesome night. It requires some forethought such as feeding the kids their dinner earlier. You know before they get all cranky and so that your date night isn’t at 10pm. The rest is all about the magic that is your relationship with your husband. Remember how it felt when you first met? What did date night consist of before the children came along? I want you to harken back to those days to come up with new ideas so that date night doesn’t get stale!
Now, what are my tried and true steps for making date night a success? How can you really rock that at-home date night?
Put a little extra effort into your appearance
How would you look if you were going out for a nice dinner? What would you wear for a night at the movies? The point is to look like you’re going on a date with your husband and not sitting at the house like any other night. This may mean something as small as refreshing your lipstick and adding a few nice pieces of jewelry. Check out my favorites. Date night for me usually entails changing clothes entirely. I’ll admit to loving living in my leggings and yoga pants when I don’t have anywhere special to be, but I know that date night is different. I rock that at-home date night by going into the closet and picking out that LBD or a nice pair of heels!
Set the scene
You can’t really have a date night if your house still looks like a disaster area. Is there food all over your kitchen table from the toddler who threw it? Clean that up! You want the place to look like a restaurant in your home. You’ll also want to dim the lights in case you missed something *wink*. I suggest setting up a low-key centerpiece on the table. Seriously it’s the small details that really make the night. You can rock that at-home date night by just making things in your house a little extra special.
EVERYTHING is better with a playlist. It really helps you to keep things going. I recommend thinking of songs that are important to you and your husband but also new ones. I’d suggest keeping it pretty mellow. We don’t want to wake the children, but we also want to be able to have a conversation over the music. You’ll be able to rock that at-home date night, though because you’ll have awesome music that can result in one of those ever romantic living room slow dances. Tell me you don’t love those in all the old movies and tv shows?
A special meal
You may go out for burgers at a local joint you love for date night, but your at-home date night may need to be a little more special. I’m not saying that burgers aren’t wonderful, but I’ve rarely cooked one as well as the restaurants we eat them at. So let’s have a little filet instead. You can go simpler obviously. Do you love tacos? Try a new recipe! The truth is that any meal can be special if you want it to be, but you have to put in a little extra effort. I love to use this time to test out new recipes. Also, you should break out that nice bottle of wine or champagne. Of course you could maybe make your husband his favorite cocktail. You can find some great recipes here.
This is going to be one of the most important elements for rocking an at-home date night. You gotta really step it up on the conversation front. The conversation should NOT involve talking about your children or schedules. This should be a conversation about things that interest the both of you. It could also be about planning another date night. I mean if your husband is like mine then he really wants to see Rogue One! You can totally figure out a way to make that happen! It takes a little planning, but you’ve got this!
Don’t skimp on dessert
It doesn’t have to be a fancy dessert, but you should make something that you totally LOVE. This can be as simple as strawberries and whip cream. Seriously! You just need to do it. If you’re like us, you’d totally at least look at the restaurant’s dessert menu, and I usually find something I want. This makes the night just that little bit of extra special. You’ll rock that at-home date night with a little something surprising. Of course you could also use dessert for my last tip!
This is not a giant banner for LET’S HAVE SEX! You can, but you can also be intimate in a million other ways. I’m certainly not going to say that you shouldn’t play a little Marvin Gaye or Charlie Pluth and just get it on, but I am saying you shouldn’t feel the pressure.
