We preach a lot about self-care. I know I spend a lot of time talking about how to make it simpler, but there are some things that are definitely going to take a bit more of your time. The time commitment doesn’t mean they’re less important. It just means that you have to fight more to find the time for them. Exercise is HUGE. You don’t want to end up feeling bad because you aren’t up and moving around. That’s why I decided to push myself by setting the goal for the Hanukkah 8k through our local JCC.
Why set a goal?
I believe that goal setting is an important part of any exercise routine because we have to know exactly what we’re trying to achieve. How would we know when we arrive otherwise? You should set easy goals to start. I started with a 10k step goal and moved up from there. I now have a 12k step goal to help me better prepare for the length of the 8k. I also don’t push myself too hard. I mean I’m definitely going to be walking this race. I’m too pregnant to think about taking up running, which is something I don’t do normally. Note: If you are a runner, you should ask your doctor but it seems that you can still run even while pregnant.
What should your routine be?
I like to keep my routine varied. You don’t want to get bored with this portion of your self-care routine. One night I might do yoga and light stretching but the next might include weight lifting. I promise that lifting weights isn’t just for dudes. Strong muscles are good for EVERYONE.
Taking care of yourself is an important part of self-care.
I think this is the most important part of self-care and physical fitness. We have to remind ourselves that being on top of our physical fitness and other self-care techniques is HUGE. We have to fill our cup before we can pour from it. These last few weeks of exercise have certainly helped me to keep my cup full. I’m able to go outside and enjoy the sunshine or I’m able to watch a little television while I stretch. It’s really helping me to feel better all around especially as I start to feel achy from pregnancy.
This is all a very important part of loving yourself. I highly suggest loving yourself through exercise!
