What is love? I think this is a question that we’ve all found ourselves asking over the years. I’d like to say that it’s a constantly changing definition in so many ways, but I know that the feeling never really changes. We know love, because we feel it. We don’t have to question whether it is there or not. It’s obvious.
Picture it: Dodgers Stadium on a hot June day.
If you’ve ever lived in Los Angeles, you know that midday during the summer can be sweltering. The June gloom had drifted away on this particular day, and I was hot. I looked at my best friend, and I said to her, “If he knows me and he loves me, he’ll bring me a frozen lemonade when he comes back.” My husband and I weren’t married at this point. We weren’t even engaged. I was joking around with my best friend. I didn’t actually think that my boyfriend would bring me a frozen lemonade. I did think that he was taking a really long time coming back from the bathroom. Of course, we all got a HUGE laugh as he walks back and hands me a frozen lemonade. It was a perfect demonstration of how well he knew me and loved me. It was a moment that I could not have planned any better if I had actually tried.
All acts of love aren’t so perfectly timed or so hilarious, but they are all so simple. That frozen lemonade wasn’t about the excess amount of money you spend at a ballpark. It was about helping me to cool down in the heat of a hot summer day. It was about knowing exactly what would put a smile on my face. There are many free ways to put a smile on my face. You know you’ve found a perfect match for you when moments like this can happen, though. They know you. They listen when you talk. You do the same for them. This is what love is, and I hope to have a billion more of those little moments as we live our everyday. They happen frequently enough that I’m not concerned about it by the way.
What is love to you? What puts a smile on your face? Is it white chocolate Reese’s Cups? If it is, I know we’re destined to be best friends!
