Over the last few days, I’ve really sat down to think about what makes me happy. What makes any of us happy? It’s hard to know since that answer is truly different for everyone, but I know that each and every one of us should be pursuing something that makes you happy even if it is something you only do in the smallest moments of our day. You don’t have to change our entire lives in order to bring a little bit of extra cheer to our day. I mean ya’ll know that there is nothing more awesome in my day than the little giggles and smiles from Sweet Baby J, but I think we all also know that we can’t live on that alone. We all need something that makes us feel warm all over other than our family and our job.
When I think about what makes me happy, I come up with some things that I’m not even very good at but they bring joy. So I want to say that you don’t have to excel at the things that make you happy. You just have to enjoy them. You have to feel gleeful while doing them despite the finished product. In my case, I enjoy doing a crossword puzzle, dancing, listening to music, reading a book, and baking. I’m terrible at the crossword puzzle. I probably have to look up something like half the answers in the back, but it makes me happy to do one and it helps to keep my brain moving. Sometimes doing a few minutes in a crossword puzzle might be all I have time for, but it helps bring everything into perspective.
The truth is that if you spend 5 minutes in your hectic day doing something that makes you feel gleeful you’ll be better at surviving the moments that make you crazy. You’ll be able to handle the curveballs that come your way in any given day, because you’ll know that you have that 5 minutes waiting for you. Or you may already feel lighter for having performed it. The truth is that we can all be our best selves everyday if we feed that part of our body and minds that really wants us to listen. The part that makes us feel lighter than air.
What makes you happy? What can you do for 5 minutes each day to feel more gleeful? How can you relieve stress? I promise you that it is this easy as I’ve done it for a few days now, and I notice a very distinct difference in how much less stressed I am.
So I want to call all of you to do it especially this holiday season. This is the time of year when we are all stressed and have too many places to be so maybe just takes 5 minutes to yourself to listen to a good pick me up song or read a few pages in a book!
