I’m so excited to finally be able to share my review for this months book. I hope ya’ll were reading The Martian along with me, but if you weren’t I’ll understand. I’ll try to keep spoilers to a minimum. I don’t want to upset any of the other book club members after all. Pick up your favorite glass of wine and let’s dive right in.
First, I’ll start by saying I love this book. I don’t think that the tagline Apollo 13 meets Castaway is really underselling it either. I was just waiting on Wilson to show up for most of the book. I’m not sure what Wilson would have looked like in Mars, but I’m guessing you’ll find something that you think related to exactly that in the book. It’s a survival story that any book club would be cheerful about I think, but I’m glad to be able to share it with you loves.
Mark Watney is a nerd after all our hearts. The style in which this book is written easily reminds me of something I’d seen my friends write if they were stuck on Mars with minimal chance of return to Earth. I have strange friends. I know. The truth is though that this was self-deprecating and humorous in a way that I know they’d be if they were faced with this exact situation. It’s a way of dealing with the unknown and/or inevitable that I can relate to all day long. This is why I loved this book. Plus, I know my mind would be meandering through a whole lot of things at any given moment. Hey, I was often distracted reading it thinking about what I would do in this exact situation. I think that’s the mark of how good this book was though.
I found myself pulling for the protagonist throughout the book. He never became boring. Let’s just face the fact that this easily could have happened to him too. He was alone on a planet with no communication. It could’ve been a snoozefest. It was anything but that. I really hope that one girl got a really awesome promotion to boot.
I’d definitely recommend this book to all of you out there reading it. What did you think of The Martian? How would you react if you were stuck on Mars? Tell me all about it, because I love hearing from you.
