I don’t spend most of my nights up thinking about controversial issues to put on this blog. As a matter of fact, I rarely discuss them at all here, but I couldn’t keep to myself on this issue. I’ve read so many Facebook statuses, tweets, and blog posts about Caitlyn Jenner over the last few days that I think it’s time to really address it here.
I’ve seen many people over the last few days declaring that Caitlyn Jenner is not a hero, but I disagree. Caitlyn Jenner isn’t the type of hero they’re referring to in their posts, but it doesn’t make her any less of a hero. She’s a hero for anyone who ever wanted something so badly they wouldn’t quit until it was done. She’s a hero to anyone who wants to live their life as their true self. She’s a hero to anyone who is looking to make a change in their life but is scared of it. She is a hero on some level whether you like it or not.
Most of you couldn’t imagine what it would be like to live 65 years struggling with your identity and not being able to live as your true self. We’re not talking about the minor struggle of finding yourself in your teens and twenties, but we are talking a lifelong hatred of the body you’re in and all that goes along with it. We’re not talking about a transformation that was ever easy either especially not for someone of Caitlyn’s generation. This transformation is a brave deed even if you don’t agree with it. All you have to do is look at all the vitriol on the internet to know that it isn’t an easy transformation.
Modern technology has made the transition easier, but it hasn’t made it less expensive. In this regard, I believe that Caitlyn has had it easier than most. She can afford to have the kind of reconstruction that makes it easy for her to look more traditionally beautiful. People everywhere are clamoring to discuss her beauty, but it’s not just about her outside. This is a struggle that has gone on psychologically for years. I’ve known people who have experienced it first hand, and I know that the final transformation is one of the biggest joys. It allows them to live as they truly see themselves with a body they can be proud of always. It allows them to really be who they are on the inside. Seeing Caitlyn Jenner make the transformation at 65 is beautiful. It gives people hope, and it makes her a hero. It allows people to know that someday it could be them. It gives the cause a voice. It gets all of us talking about the struggle. Mostly, it is a heroic act to put yourself out there so publicly for something that isn’t understood and is often met with hatred. We can’t deny that Caitlyn Jenner has a platform not afforded to most. It is a platform that gets everyone talking about their plight. This is the kind of platform that at least has all of us talking about her change. Isn’t that amazing? Talk is cheap though so if you really want to back Caitlyn Jenner and other transgendered people through their struggle try listening and doing what you can to make a difference and normalizing their life.
