So my word of the year was adventure, and I wasted no time getting started. I think that we all like to hit the ground running with our hopes for the new year, yeah? I’m no exception. My goal for the year was to choose a new adventure located in our general area per weekend. I think that most of us miss out on a lot of cool opportunities in our local areas, because we just don’t know they exist. I remember growing up I always thought there was nothing to do in my hometown but after moving away I have found that there are lots of things to experience there, and I believe this is the same anywhere. So this year I wanted to focus on getting to know new things locally. Of course we will travel, and we will find adventures in those places as well. Local is important though.
Now that I’ve started, I thought it might be fun to get everyone involved. We started with the hashtag #adventure2015 on instagram, and we would love to see your adventures as well. Please feel free to use the hashtag and share with us!
For our first adventure 2015, the hubs and I went to Bangkok Market. I heard about this market on the Food Network, because Jet Tila’s parents own it. Tila’s family came to Los Angeles in 1966 and opened Bangkok Market in 1972. They were trying to create a place for people to come and find the traditional Asian ingredients that were not easy to find here that they so frequently cooked with back home. The hubs and I decided to cook a Thai meal so what better place to go and get the ingredients than from the best Thai market in LA.
As you can see there is a wide array of fresh ingredients in this small market, and we had fun looking through them all. We got to the checkout with only one item being a mistake so I think that’s a real bonus for newcomers to this type of market. We had picked up the wrong kind of fish sauce. It wouldn’t be an adventure if you didn’t get a little lost, right? The very kind lady at the cash register got us sorted out and sent someone to pick us the correct item. Yay!
All in all, I believe that our first adventure of 2015 was a success. We weren’t able to find all the ingredients we needed at one shop, but I think we were just looking for things that were super popular such as Thai basil and Thai chiles. The store was fairly easy to maneuver and we were able to make a successful dinner. I forgot to take photos of dinner that evening. I know. I’m a bad blogger! We had Turkey Larb and Thai Yellow Curry.
What kind of adventure might you go on next?
