Hey ya’ll! I know I’ve been sick all week and unable to put a post together for you, but I’m back now. I’m still feeling under the weather, but I couldn’t wait one more second to share this with you.
Note: This is a sponsored post. I was given a free meal for my time. All opinions are 100% mine.
Ya’ll know I don’t play around about food. Michael’s Pizzeria was a favorite of ours before we were invited to try out their brunch menu, but we normally go to the one over on Naples Island. This was our first time at the downtown Long Beach location of Michael’s Pizzeria, but we were aware of it. The hubs and I ran across it when we were headed to a special event at Beachwood BBQ, which is basically next door. Anyway, I was excited to try the brunch menu after having eating off the dinner menu at Michael’s Pizzera before. Plus, ya’ll know brunch is my favorite meal.
I will say that when we arrived there was some confusion on what seemed like every level. The restaurant didn’t open til 11:30AM, but I had been confirmed for an 11AM reservation. This was not the fault of the restaurant and we were quickly seated upon our 11AM arrival. We chatted and got to know the staff. They were teasing each other a lot, and I loved the atmosphere. They were having fun yet still serious about their job. I think that’s an important part of any restaurant experience. You want to feel like people like their work environment even though we all know that working in food services can be a terrible job sometimes. I did it for many years. Now let’s move onto some food! I’m hungry just remembering it after all.
Okay ya’ll, I didn’t even know that rosemary would go well with cinnamon rolls until I put these in my mouth. While it was not a flavor combination I would have thought of, it was perfection. The rosemary added a depth of flavor and that wee bit of savory you needed not to make these little bites overly sweet. If there hadn’t been so many other amazing food choices than I might have just kept ordering these all day. See, I told you it was a good thing I passed my glucose test. This baby loves sugar.
Because not all breakfast treats can be sweet, we tried the Salsiccia. This is a house made fennel sausage with tomato and peppers. It was to die for over the bread. I’d cut up a couple of pieces of sausage to put on top of my tomato and pepper I’d spread across the bun. I kept going back for more. It was definitely a great way to get more protein into my diet that morning. I love fennel, because it always adds a little kick to a dish. I also love that this sausage was house made. It’s the little details that really keep you coming back to foods and restaurants. This dish was definitely a hit, and it’s not the only thing Michael’s Pizzeria makes in-house. You should really also try their chili sauce.
The next dish was the Anatra. It was a fritatta with duck and caramelized shallots. This earthy frittata was enough to send you over the edge with flavor. Yeah, I know you’re thinking that I haven’t been able to eat eggs this entire pregnancy. That’s true. I wasn’t able to eat the largest portion of this dish either, but I know I’ll be trying it again once my taste buds are back to normal. I ate a small portion, and I was not disappointed.
Now we moved on to pizza! You can’t go to Michael’s Pizzeria without trying the pizza. It’s delicious. This was their Pizze Bianca. It is a seasonal pizza made with pecorino, Bosco pear, mozzarella, arugula, and honey. Michael’s Pizzeria also makes their mozzarella in house. You’ll see it featured a bit more on the next pizza. This was another wonderful sweet yet savory treat. The peppery taste of the arugula and the nuttiness of the pecorino really just upping the flavor of the pear and honey to a new level. I ate several more pieces of this when we got home. A major plus side to Michael’s Pizzeria is that their box gives you perfect reheating instructions and you are able to have the same experience at home that you had in the restaurant.
Michael’s Pizzeria is known for their Margherita D.O.P. (Denomination of Origin Protected). This pizza was voted the best Neapolitan pizza in the nation. How can you pass that up? Plus look at that house made mozzarella cheese all over it. It’s like a pizza after my own heart. The flavors melding together perfectly. This one I especially love to dig into with a fork and knife. I don’t want to miss any of the good flavor. My hubs would also tell you that I ate the crust on both pizzas. I never eat the crust.
While I’m discussing house made items, we must talk about this strawberry jam. It was just the right amount of chunky and sweet. The toast was so soft that it was like eating the strawberry jam off of a pillow. So basically I’m saying that if you don’t try all the house made things there then you’re really missing out.
A meal wouldn’t be complete without dessert, right? Michael’s Pizzeria never disappoints with a selection of house made gelatos. Now I’ve been in love with gelato since my college days in Italy so you can imagine how happy this makes me. We were able to try their best seller the hazelnut gelato as well as the pumpkin.
They were both very much packed with flavor. It was like eating an actual hazelnut in gelato form. The pumpkin wasn’t overpowering, but it was like eating your favorite holiday treats in the best possible way. I was practically delivered back to the streets of Florence.
We finished with the Ciambelle. These are Italian donuts with an orange glaze. Anyone who knows me knows that I love citrusy desserts so I couldn’t resist this one. Plus, I’m from the South so I love fried things. A fried sweet donut with an orange glaze is like heaven to me. This was amazing. I wish I had one right now.
Not only was the food at Michael’s Pizzeria delicious, but they source their ingredients locally whenever possible. We learned that they source their ingredients from Farm59 a local farm to the Long Beach area. I thought that was super awesome having grown up on a farm myself. Plus, I grew up with Grainger County tomatoes, and if you haven’t had one of those then shame on you! In all seriousness though, I love Michael’s Pizzeria, and I believe that you will too. You should stop in to any of their three locations. They are in Downtown Long Beach, Naples Island, and Rancho Mirage. I hope you’ll tell me about your experience when you visit.
What do you think looks like it would taste the most delicious to you?
