We live in a world where we can share articles with the simplest click of a button, and I love this. I don’t miss out on a lot of really cool articles that I might have if I had to find them all myself, but I also hate this. I hate this because not all information sharing is created equal. I know we all like sharing information so I wanted to share with ya’ll 3 Things You should Know Before Sharing Information
1. Is the information factual or opinion?
You don’t want to go around sharing information that is opinion as if it were factual. Sharing opinions is certainly a great way to start conversation among a group of people, because you’ll have some who agree and others who disagree. I love the lively debates that this can create, but I also know that we all have to be careful to not be judgmental. Everyone has different opinions of things. Factual information sharing is different though, because you are trying to share information that conveys information that may be helpful to your friends. Essentially you just have to know what kind of information your sharing, and you should be able to back up factual articles with even more factual data.
2. The source of the information.
Is the source reputable? You don’t want to share articles from tabloids, satire sites, or other non reputable sources as if they are fact, because it will make it more difficult to trust any information you are sharing. I know so many people who share articles on Facebook that cannot be found except on that one site, and I know they didn’t check the link. I think I’ve become infamous for pointing out when something comes from a bad source too, because I know that most of those sites are trying to elicit fear in the people who are reading them, or they are just trying to be funny. Of course you can share funny articles all the time so long as you realize they’re actually supposed to be funny
3. Your audience
You need to know the type of people you are sharing information with, because you don’t want to share all information equally. I have known hypochondriacs who don’t need to read every article about diseases running rampant throughout the world. They’d think they were dying constantly!
Once you know these three things then you are ready to start sharing information in an informed way. This makes most people cringe less when they look at the information you’ve posted. I love sharing information with ya’ll. What’s your least favorite type of information sharing?
