I’ve always been highly amused by old wives’ tales. You can’t really always trust them to be right of course, but I think at the time when they were created there was probably a reason for it. They saw some sort of correlation back before the medicine was available to back it up or something along those lines. I decided to try a few so that I could list them here for you. We can compare at the end of the pregnancy to see if any of them held true for me.
Shape of face –if the shape of your face is fuller than it was before you got pregnant then it’s supposedly a girl. Long and narrow is a boy.
I’m giving this one to girl. My face is definitely fuller than it was before.
Key test– pick up a key. If you pick it up by the smallest part – girl, largest part- boy, middle- twins
I’ve always picked up the key by the smallest part so this one goes to girl by default.
Mayan Tale– Age + year of conception. Even is girl and odd is boy.
I’m 32 and we conceived in 2014. Clearly this one can’t come up with an odd number so girl it is!
Acne– If you don’t have it boy, and if you do girl.
My face cleared up almost as soon as I got pregnant so this one goes to boy.
Cravings– If you crave salty things it’s a boy, but if you crave fruity things it’s a girl.
Girl gets this one. I definitely didn’t get on the salty cravings.
Garlic– If you eat this and no smell releases from your pores it’s a boy.
I can’t even stand the smell of garlic so I have no clue if I would sweat it out of my pores or not. This one is a toss-up.
Protein– Crave meat, cheese, and dairy it’s a boy.
I’ve never really been that big of a fan of meat. I typically crave sweets so I’m going with girl.
Hair on Legs– If this grows faster than normal it’s a boy.
Mine does not so I’m going with girl.
Hands are dry– If your hands are dry and in need of lotion constantly it’s a boy.
Girl gets this one. My hands were incredibly cracked and itchy before I got pregnant, but they are clear and soft now. I’ll admit the rest of my body is super dry though.
Nose– If your nose grows or gets wider then it’s a boy.
Girl. My nose is definitely not pulling a Pinocchio.
Headache– If you get these pretty frequently it’s probably a boy.
Boy. I don’t get them as often as I did in the first trimester though. I think these were mostly caused by low blood sugar.
Baby names– If you can only agree on one name then you’ll have that gender.
Boy. I think this one is actually more of a toss-up than that though, because we can agree on a girls first name. It was fairly easy actually.
Heartrate– Above 140 is a girl and below 130 is a boy.
Girl. We have absolutely had the heartrate drop below 140 once during the entire pregnancy.
Shape of belly– Big and round is a girl while low and sticking straight out is a boy.
Considering I cannot comfortably wear a bra without it rubbing the top of my belly raw then I’m going to go with girl.
Side you rest on– Left is boy and right is girl.
I force myself to lay on my left a lot, because I know it’s better for the baby, but when it comes to sleeping I do better on my right. I’m going with girl.
Mom’s intuition– Okay so they say that this one has a 71% accuracy rate.
I think it’s a girl. I don’t have a preference, and I’ll be fine with either gender, but my gut tells me it’s a girl.
Morning sickness– If you got sick then it’s a girl, but if you didn’t it’s a boy.
I didn’t really get as sick as most, but I was definitely queasy a lot (mostly when I was hungry). I’ll give this one to girl.
History of parents– Your next oldest sibling is the type you’ll have
This would go to a boy regardless of where I fell in the family order. I am the oldest, but I have 6 younger brothers.
Legs– If legs stay lean then it’s a girl, but if they get big then it’s a boy.
I only really show in my belly area and my face is a little fuller. This means girl for this one.
Chinese Gender Chart– This claims a 90% accuracy. It is based on the mother’s age and month of conception.
It says girl.
Those are all the ones I have for now. The ring test hasn’t happened yet nor have I mixed my pee with Drano. Some of these things just weren’t feasible. We don’t exactly keep Drano just lying around the house. I’d say that girl basically wins out on this one, but we’ll see when the time comes.
Which is your favorite old wives’ tale?
