I’ve been running around all day stopping in locations to change my name on various documents. It’s not easy to change your name, but it’s also not particularly hard. It’s a lot of waiting. I’ll admit that the Social Security Administration took far less time than I would have guessed, but it was a small office. Plus, I had all my paperwork filled out beforehand with my marriage certificate and driver’s license out and ready to go. There are some things you should know when it comes to changing your name.
1. Go to the Social Security Administration first
This is HUGE. If you don’t then you’ll have difficulty all the way around. In order to change your social security card, you’ll need a drivers license or passport with your maiden name. When you go to change your license, it will need to match up with your social security number.
2. Next stop DMV
Everything else will most likely need your driver’s license. This includes your new registration for your car and any other personal accounts. Plus you’ll need your ID to match your name on credit cards etc for ease of use.
3. Change EVERYTHING
Don’t leave some stuff undone while other stuff is done. It’ll get confusing and complicated as time goes on. If you want to change your name then truly commit to making the change and don’t do a half-hearted job.
