This month, my foodie pen pal was from Puerto Rico. This meant that I was going to get an interesting mix of things that I definitely could not find at the local grocery store. I was uber excited for this fact. Mango and Soursop juices. Paella ingredients. Ginger, coconut, and sprinkles cookies! Jamon sandwich spread. Fruit chews. Canned pink salmon. Coffee. Okay, so maybe I could have gotten a few of these at my local grocery store, but it was way more fun getting them from Puerto Rico and I was also introduced to new things. I haven’t had very much time to play around with the combinations of food flavors yet, but I look forward to making salmon croquettes this weekend.
I’ll be honest though that I was most excited about the paella package. Paella was one of my favorite dishes when I visited Spain some 15 years ago. I can’t believe it’s been that long, but I would eat tortilla in the morning and paella in the evening. This was blissful to me. I love Spanish food and tapas more than you could even fathom. I love that Spanish restaurants are starting to pop up all over the city of Los Angeles. There still isn’t that much variety, but it is coming into it’s own. Tapas are basically bar bites. In Spain, you can eat free tapas a lot of places so long as you are drinking. The tapas are amazing too and each bar has their own specialty. I can almost taste them as I write about it. The only thing that could be better after an authentic Spanish meal is authentic Italian gelato. I’ll keep dreaming about that.
Now that I’ve shared what was in my foodie pen pal package, I would like to share with you a few of my favorite links from this week.
