I know that most of you are always looking for cheap and easy treats especially if you have little ones. I can’t imagine anything better for a quick and easy treat than something that also pulls back memories from your own childhood. You’ll see that this post will turn into a bit of a Cracker Jack treat on it’s own. It’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination if you’re comparing it straight to the treat, but I think it’ll do something for your sweet tooth and add a little bit of salty flavoring. Maybe this Valentine’s Day is just about mixing it up. It could be a lesson in having a multidimensional personality.
You know it’s pretty great when a recipe only calls for 3 ingredients and a microwave. This means that you can make it in probably less than 15minutes. I threw this caramel corn together from a bag of caramels, milk, and popcorn and it could have been done in the amount of time it takes your kids to brush their teeth if it weren’t for the fact I burnt the first batch of caramel. Don’t do that! Also, I don’t advise making this for your kids after they’ve brushed their teeth.
The truth is that while the initial steps don’t take very long it will still need to sit in the fridge to harden for a little while. You don’t want the caramel corn sticking to fingers or to each other. In order to make sure you can break them apart easily and that your child can enjoy them about half an hour in the fridge is going to be necessary. I would advise that you taste test first, as always.
It is really as easy though as melting caramel with milk in a bowl and pouring popcorn into it. Originally I had thought of pouring the caramel into the bag and shaking it much like I’d make a salad. I gave away to this idea when I realized that the caramel may indeed be slightly too thick. You could probably solve this problem with a little more milk than I used for this batch. It’s something that I will probably continue to play around with from time to time.
Now it’s time to spread it over your silicon baking mat. I swear these really are the most handy things in the kitchen. You’ll wonder how you ever lived without one as you start using it and getting used to it. Those cookies that you were always supposed to make on an ungreased pan come off easily and taste even more delicious. I swear by it! Plus when you have kids running around this makes clean up a breeze. This treat looks messy, but we went from dirty to clean in about 5minutes. It was well worth it.
